The brutal drought of '98 is a distant memory or so we would like to think. Plants entered the winter in a weakened condition and now struggle through the early months of 1999. Last month was the 6th warmest February on record and with less than one-half inch of rainfall all month. To make matters worse, we never had enough cold this winter to satisfy the rest period temperature plants need to break dormancy and vigorously grow. As a result, many plants are currently borderline on survival.
Now would be a good time to thoroughly evaluate your landscape. If your plants are not performing well replace them with Xeriscape/Native drought-hardy species. It will be a hard call in many cases, but if you can determine that your plants just aren't going to pull through replace them now before summer hits.
Mild temperatures and lack of rainfall this year have allowed our Capital Projects contractors to remain on schedule. Our targeted completion is set for late spring/early summer of this year. Projects include upgrades to pumps, electrical controls, metering, and remote monitoring of pump stations. Our new 2 million gallon ground storage tank located at the Copper Hill pump station is ready for testing. You can see a picture of this tank by visiting our web site at www.bartonvillewater.com . Other projects include a 12" water main that will extend from Copper Canyon Rd. just north of Camp Briarwood and cross country west to the new Copper Woods subdivision located in Copper Canyon. This new water main will provide additional flows directly across the service area and into the Woodlands subdivision/Chinn Chapel Rd. area.
Bartonville Water Supply Corporation is also participating in the oversizing of 8000' feet of new 16" water main along FM 407 North. This main will be the first phase of a new pipeline to benefit our members in the northwest portion of our service area including the Saddlebrook Estates subdivision.
To ensure an adequate future water supply Bartonville Water Supply Corporation is also participating with other area utilities in the expansion of the Upper Trinity Regional Water District's water treatment plant. This first expansion phase will provide supplies through the year 2005.
If you haven't already, now is a great time to have your irrigation system thoroughly checked out for leaks, faulty heads, etc. Losses from these systems are not only costly but wasteful as well. Unattended hoses can also account for large water losses. Believe it our not, a 1/2" hose has a flow rate of 600 gallons per hour and a 5/8" hose has a flow rate of 1000 g.p.h. If left running overnight a hose could waste as much as 5,000 gallons in an 8 to 10 hour period.
The Argyle Volunteer Fire District is in need of additional volunteers. Please use extreme care in outdoor burning due to the dry conditions. For more information and explanations, please call:
